Operation

A heart operation is a serious technically difficult performance. Therefore, it is preceded by a detail preoperative examination focused on the general principles of preoperative care and specifically focused on the given disease. The operation itself is performed under general anaesthesia = the patient is sleeping. The extracorporeal circulation is used in most operations. The common duration of the operation is 3 – 4 hours. After the operation, the patient, usually still sleeping with artificial lung ventilation, is transferred to an intensive postoperative room, where he or she stays until the basic life functions are stabilized.
Before the operation a catheter is inserted into every patient´s urinary bladder to facilitate urination during the postoperative period and a cannula to the central vein for the administration of drugs and infusions.
The patient is informed about the operation by an admitting physician, and after the operation, by the operating surgeon on the procedure of the performance.
